How to colour-correct a video and add a filter

Phone footage often comes out a little flat or cold. A look and a few sliders fix most of it, and the video stays on your computer.

Steps

  1. Select the clip

With the video on the timeline, click the clip. Looks and colour are set for each clip on its own, on video and picture clips.

  2. Press "Filter"

Press "Filter" in the left panel list (it is greyed out until a clip is selected). It opens the "Look" section in the clip settings, on the "Video" tab.

  3. Pick a look

There are ten: "None", "Daylight", "Cool", "Vivid", "Flat", "Evening", "Black and white", "Faded", "Green" and "Hard". "Daylight" lifts and warms the picture a little and suits most phone footage; "Cool" suits screens and product shots; "Vivid" suits sport and quick cuts. "None" takes the look off.

  4. Adjust by hand

Open "Colour", just below. "Brightness", "Contrast", "Saturation", "Temperature" and "Tint" each start in the middle, where nothing changes. The sliders work on top of the look: pick "Vivid" and you can still pull "Saturation" back.

  5. Match the other clips

Each clip keeps its own settings. Select the next clip and give it the same look and values, so the colour does not jump at the cut. A clip you split after grading keeps the same settings on both halves.

  6. Export

The preview and the export draw the picture the same way, so what you see is what goes into the file. Press "Export" and pick MP4. On the free plan exports go up to 1080p and 3 minutes, without a watermark.
