How to use a green screen in the browser
Film in front of a green cloth, then swap the green for any video you like. Two clips, two rows, one switch, and both files stay on your computer.
Steps
Open both videos
Open the editor and press "Choose a file", or drop the green-screen video onto the drop area. Add the background video the same way. It lands after the first one on the same row, so for now they play one after the other.
Put the background on its own row, behind
Drag the background clip down onto the dashed row under the tracks, the one that says "Drop files here or click to add". Let go there and it gets a new video row under the first one. Then drag it left until it starts where the green-screen clip starts; it snaps into place. The upper row is in front, so the person stays on top.
Turn on "Green screen"
Click the green-screen clip on the timeline. In the clip settings, on the "Video" tab, open "Background" and turn on "Green screen". The green goes transparent and the background video shows through, in the preview and in the export.
Clean up the edges
If your screen is not the usual green, click the colour swatch under the switch and pick the colour of your screen. Raise "Tolerance" until the last patches of the screen are gone; lower it if parts of the person start to disappear. "Edge softness" softens the cut-out line, and "Green spill clean-up" takes the green glow off hair and shoulders.
Place the person, then export
Under "Layout", use "Scale", "Horizontal" and "Vertical" to size and place the person over the background, or drag the clip on the preview. If the background video has sound you do not want, select it and turn its "Volume" down to zero on the "Audio" tab. Press "Export" and pick MP4. On the free plan exports go up to 1080p and 3 minutes, without a watermark.
Tips
- An evenly lit screen without creases comes off at a low "Tolerance", which keeps fine detail like hair.
- For a blue screen, pick its blue with the colour swatch and turn "Green spill clean-up" down to zero: that setting only takes green out.
- Do not wear anything the colour of the screen. Whatever matches it disappears with it.
