How to cut a video to the beat of the music
Cuts that land on the beat make a montage feel edited rather than assembled. The editor finds the tempo for you and shows it before it cuts.
Steps
Open the video
Open the editor and press "Choose a file", or drop the video onto the drop area.
Add the song
Open "Media" in the left panel list, press "Add a file" and pick the song. A file with no picture goes on the sound row at the bottom, starting where the video starts, so the two play together.
Find the beat
Click the video clip, open "Smart" in the left panel list and press "Split to the beat". It listens to the song on the sound row and reports the tempo, for example "120 bpm found; one cut a bar, 22 cuts." If the beat is hard to hear, it says so; give the result a listen.
Apply
Press "Apply". The video is split once a bar, every four beats, not on every beat, which would flash rather than cut. Ctrl+Z undoes all the splits in one step.
Shape it and export
The pieces between cuts are each one bar long, so removing one with Shift+Delete pulls the rest back by a whole bar and they stay on the beat. Press "Mute" in the header of the video’s track if only the music should be heard, then press "Export".
Tips
- If the video was recorded with the music already in it, such as a dance clip, skip the song: with nothing on the sound row, "Split to the beat" listens to the video itself.
- Speech, room tone or silence has no beat to find; the tool says so instead of guessing.
