How to remove background noise from a video
A hum under the voice makes a good video sound cheap. One switch takes most of it out, and the sound never leaves your computer.
Steps
Open the video and listen
Open the editor and press "Choose a file", or drop the video onto the drop area. Press Space and listen for the noise: a fan, traffic, wind on the microphone.
Turn on "Reduce noise"
Click the clip on the timeline. In the clip settings, open the "Audio" tab and, under "Time and sound", switch on "Reduce noise". It takes out hum, wind and air conditioning and keeps the voice, and it runs on your device.
Play it back
Press Space again. The preview plays the same sound the export will write, so what you hear now is what you get. Switch it off and on to compare.
Even out the level
Open "Smart" in the left panel list and press "Even out the sound". It reads the sound first and tells you how far off it is, for example "The sound is 6 dB quiet". Nothing changes until you press "Apply"; it then raises or lowers every clip with sound by the same amount, and never so far that it would clip.
Export
Press "Export" and pick MP4. The noise reduction and the new level are both written into the file.
Tips
- "Reduce noise" belongs to one clip. Pieces you split off after turning it on keep it; a clip that was already separate needs it switched on as well.
- It is made for voices. Leave it off on a music clip.
- Noise reduction cannot rebuild a voice that is buried. Recording closer to the microphone does more than any filter.
