How to add text to a video

A title, a name, a price: a few words on screen get the message across even with the sound off. Six steps, and the video stays on your computer.

Steps

  1. Go to the moment and press "Text"

Play to where the text should appear and stop there. Press "Text" in the left panel list. New text reading "Title" lands on the "Text" track at the top, starting at the playhead and up to three seconds long. It sits in the lower third of the frame and is selected.

  2. Type your words

In the clip settings, replace "Title" in the "Text" box with your own words. Turkish letters such as ş, ğ, ı and İ show correctly in every font.

  3. Start from a ready style

"Ready styles" holds twelve looks, from "Clean" and "Outlined" to "Headline", "Comic" and "Typewriter". Picking one sets the whole look at once, font and motion included, so pick the style first and fine-tune after.

  4. Fine-tune the look

"Font" lists twenty fonts in four groups: "Plain", "Display", "Serif" and "Handwriting". Below it are "Bold", "Text size", "Colour", "Alignment", "Outline" (with its colour and width), "Shadow" and "Background box" (with "Box colour"). A box keeps text readable over a busy picture.

  5. Place it and set how it moves

Drag the text on the preview to move it, or drag a corner to resize it. For exact numbers, "Layout" has "Scale", "Horizontal" and "Vertical". "In" sets how the text arrives: "Fade", "Slide", "Grow" or "Typewriter". "Out" sets how it leaves: "Fade", "Slide" or "Grow".

  6. Set how long it stays, then export

On the timeline, drag either edge of the text clip to show it for longer or shorter, or drag the whole clip to move it in time. Press "Export"; the text is drawn into the picture exactly as the preview shows it.
