How to cut the silences out of a video automatically
Talking-head videos lose most of their pace in the pauses. The silence cutter finds them and tells you what it found before it changes anything.
Steps
Open the recording
Open the editor and press "Choose a file", or drop the video onto the drop area. It works on a trimmed clip too: it reads the whole recording and cuts only the pauses that fall inside the clip.
Open Smart
Click the clip on the timeline, then open "Smart" in the left panel list.
Press "Cut the silences"
On Pro, press "Cut the silences". It reads the sound on your device and reports what it found, for example "14 silences found. Cutting them makes the video 00:38.40 shorter." Nothing has changed yet. On the free plan the button is locked and "See Pro" shows what the plan includes.
Tune "How aggressive"
If the result is too much or too little, move "How aggressive" and press "Cut the silences" again. Further to the right, shorter pauses count as silence too. Each run gives a new count and a new length, so you can compare before deciding.
Apply and watch it through
Press "Apply". The clip is split at both edges of every pause and the gaps are closed. Play it from the start; if a cut feels too tight, Ctrl+Z undoes the whole thing in one step.
Tips
- Each cut leaves a few hundredths of a second either side of the pause, so words are not clipped at the edge.
- On the free plan you can do the same by hand: the flat stretches in the clip’s waveform are the pauses. Put the playhead at each end and press S (or "Split"), select the piece in between and press Shift+Delete to remove it and close the gap.
